One-Eyed Cutie Finds Forever Home with Two Feline Companions: A Tripod and Another One-Eyed Cat!

When we stumbled upon Dorito’s social media profile, we were instantly captivated by his bright orange fur, expressive face, and striking green eye. Intrigued to know more about this charming one-eyed feline, we contacted his owner Michelle, who kindly shared his heartwarming story with us. Michelle revealed how Dorito had suffered an injury to his eye before he was rescued, and how he found his loving forever home in October 2017. We also discovered that Dorito is not the only one-eyed cat in the household, and that he never lets his disability hold him back from living life to the fullest. We were delighted to learn about Dorito’s daily routine in his forever home in Halifax, Canada, and the adorable tale behind his unique name. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed hearing Dorito’s story and hope that you will too!

The adorable feline named Dorito was discovered as a stray on a farm in New Brunswick, Canada. He appeared out of nowhere and decided to stay there for a few months. Although he had an injury, the farmers assumed that it wasn’t a matter of concern and that he was born that way. As the winter was approaching, the farm owner didn’t want Dorito to suffer the cold outside anymore, so they thought of surrendering him to SPCA. However, it was kitten season at that time, and the local SPCA was already overloaded with animals.

After learning that most other rescue organizations were already full and had stopped accepting new rescues, I was asked by a friend to help a feral cat named Dorito. Without knowing what he looked like or how he behaves, I picked him up from his previous container and immediately brought him to the vet. It was only then that I saw his adorable face and realized just how friendly he was – he craved for attention and petting. I fell in love with him instantly. After his examination, we discovered that he had an ear infection and an ulcer on his cornea, which resulted in the need for his eye to be removed.

Interviewer: What led you to choose a cat with one eye for adoption?

Cat owner: I have always been fond of animals with special needs. In fact, we already have two cats – one with three legs named Ziggy and another one-eyed cat called Herbie. Hence, I knew that this cat would be a perfect addition to our furry family.

It’s no wonder that people wish they had found him first. In an interview with MAF, the owner was asked to shed some light on the corneal ulcer that resulted in Dorito losing one of his eyes.

M:
We’re not sure how Dorito got a corneal ulcer, but it caused serious damage to his eye. During his initial examination, the veterinarian determined that he had been dealing with this injury for at least one year.
MAF:
Can you share the reason why he’s named Dorito with us?

M:
While searching for a suitable name for my feline companion, I was snacking on some Doritos with a friend. As I laid my eyes on the bag, it hit me – “That’s it! His name should be Dorito!”
MAF:
What do you think are some misconceptions that people have about cats with unique appearances, such as one-eyed cats?

M:
It’s important for people to understand that cats with disabilities or who look different are not “broken” or in need of pity. They are just as capable and deserving of love and affection as any other cat. I wish more people knew that cats like Dorito have unique personalities and skills that should be celebrated, rather than overlooked because of their appearance. It’s time to stop judging cats based on their looks and start appreciating them for the amazing creatures they are.

Mentioning the Instagram profile of @king.dorito_, it is stated that one-eyed cats are not very different from other cats. They may appear distinctively, but they can adapt quickly with one eye and offer the same level of love as any other cat or even more. When it comes to Dorito, he loves to play, especially with tunnels. He also loves chasing laser cat toys and watching birds in his catio. Dorito is always willing to play regardless of the time, and he loves food too. For the owner, Dorito means everything, and their bond is beyond description. Dorito sleeps with the owner every night, wakes them up every morning, and waits by the head sometimes. The owner feels that Dorito is grateful for being rescued, and he seems appreciative of everything he has.
